Richard Holt, Editor-in-Chief of Diabetic Medicine and Professor in Diabetes and Endocrinology at the University of Southampton, explains how the series of review articles for the priorities from the Type 1 and 2 Diabetes JLA PSPs came about:
Diabetic Medicine is owned by Diabetes UK and the editorial board were aware of and impressed by the two JLA PSPs with Diabetes UK on research priorities in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Diabetic Medicine publishes a number of invited review articles, sometimes within special issues, and Professor Nick Oliver, the journal reviews editor, proposed commissioning of a series of invited review articles for each of the research priorities.
For the type 1 diabetes research priorities, the reviews would focus on the progress since the priorities were established in 2012 and would seek to examine the future progress we may expect to see. For the newer type 2 diabetes priorities, the reviews were designed to establish a baseline on which the future research can develop. I strongly supported Nick’s idea and we commissioned the articles.
We realised that given the different schedules of the authors, it was unlikely that we would be able to publish all the articles together, which is why we published the first set in March 2019 and will publish the current reviews in April 2021. Once complete, we will create a virtual issue on the journal website where all the articles can be accessed together.
Improving diabetes care is dependent on high quality research in areas that matter to people with diabetes. This is why the JLA work is so important and why we believed our readers would be interested in this special issue.
